In the Master’s program in “Archaeology,” you will deepen your specialized knowledge and develop a clear academic profile in one of the following areas of focus:

  • Classical Archaeology
  • Christian and Byzantine Archaeology and Art History
  • Prehistory, Early History, and Medieval Archaeology
  • Geoarchaeology

You will acquire sound methodological skills and specialized working methods that enable you to analyze archaeological sources and findings independently and critically. In doing so, you will learn to interpret the material legacies of past societies within historical, cultural-historical, and scientific contexts and to discuss them with theoretical reflection. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary perspectives. You will incorporate scientific methods as well as cultural studies and historical approaches. In this way, you will learn to address complex issues in a nuanced manner and develop innovative research approaches. Furthermore, the program qualifies you to communicate archaeological findings in various contexts. You will engage with issues related to museum work, heritage preservation, and the public presentation of cultural heritage. In doing so, you will also reflect on cultural-political contexts and societal debates surrounding the protection, preservation, and presentation of cultural assets. Over the course of the program, you will also learn to independently design research and project proposals, coordinate them in an interdisciplinary manner, and actively shape institutional and international collaborations
