 n 2013\, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now present in all state par
 liaments and\nmany local councils\, gaining voter support despite continue
 d parliamentary marginalisation (Heinze 2022). This\npaper examines how th
 e far right affects local democracy in Germany through (1) an ethnographic
  case study of\nAfD campaign events\, and (2) an interview study with prof
 essionals working in cultural institutions. While much\nresearch on far-ri
 ght populism focuses on demand or supply-side factors\, my research consid
 ers populism as a\nlocally enacted political practice. The paper highlight
 s disruptive strategies such as parliamentary motions\, hate\nspeech and p
 ersonal threats that aim to intimidate and distract people working in inst
 itutions. These tactics\nundermine democratic institutions and often lead 
 to self-censorship and disengagement. Furthermore\, an\nethnographic persp
 ective shows how the AfD organises these disruptive strategies and engages
  'ordinary citizens'\nin shaping local institutions. By analysing these pr
 actices\, the paper demonstrates how far-right populism\noperates at the l
 ocal level\, shaping institutional behaviour and threatening democratic di
 scourse.
