In the Master’s program in “Archaeology,” you will deepen your specialized knowledge and develop a clear academic profile in one of the following areas of focus:
- Classical Archaeology
- Christian and Byzantine Archaeology and Art History
- Prehistory, Early History, and Medieval Archaeology
- Geoarchaeology
You will acquire sound methodological skills and specialized working methods that enable you to analyze archaeological sources and findings independently and critically. In doing so, you will learn to interpret the material legacies of past societies within historical, cultural-historical, and scientific contexts and to discuss them with theoretical reflection. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary perspectives. You will incorporate scientific methods as well as cultural studies and historical approaches. In this way, you will learn to address complex issues in a nuanced manner and develop innovative research approaches. Furthermore, the program qualifies you to communicate archaeological findings in various contexts. You will engage with issues related to museum work, heritage preservation, and the public presentation of cultural heritage. In doing so, you will also reflect on cultural-political contexts and societal debates surrounding the protection, preservation, and presentation of cultural assets. Over the course of the program, you will also learn to independently design research and project proposals, coordinate them in an interdisciplinary manner, and actively shape institutional and international collaborations
Objectives
The master’s program prepares you for a diverse and evolving professional field. The profession of archaeologist combines scholarly work with practical activities in research, teaching, public relations, and science communication. With your degree, you’ll qualify for an academic career as well as for positions in:
- Universities and research institutes
- Private-sector archaeology
- Museums and exhibition venues
- Historic preservation agencies and heritage conservation
- Cultural administration and cultural management
- Media, journalism, and publishing
- Tourism
Admission requirements
Required university degree Required university degree: We require proof of completion of a relevant bachelor’s degree program in the field of “Archaeological Sciences” or in other fields of classical ancient studies or the geosciences, or proof of a comparable domestic or foreign university degree qualifying for professional practice. Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admission International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the German language. The German Language Test for University Admission (DSH-2) is required Admission Mode The program is open (no admission quota).
